I come to this story as an outsider despite it being about my family.

I never knew my father well. He erected a shield of vodka bottles against any closeness.
That shield extended to his two brothers, so I never got to know them either.
To this day I cannot name all of my Corrigan cousins.
My father died from his excesses in 1986.
A pivotal moment in my life came 20 years later, shortly after my father's younger brother, Hugh Corrigan, had passed away; I was invited to visit his family in Ithaca, N.Y.
That visit included the opportunity to watch some videotapes of my uncle being interviewed about his World War II experiences in the Pacific Theater.
Uncle Hugh evidently was a kinder, gentler version of my father.
But the brothers' physical resemblance was uncanny. Watching those tapes was an emotionally charged experience for me: My father, too, served in the Pacific T
