    Rachel Zawadi Luttrell (born 19 January 1971) is a Tanzanian-born Canadian actress best known for her role as Teyla Emmagan in Stargate Atlantis (2004–2009).

    Early life

    Luttrell was born 19 January 1971,[1] in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania,[2] the daughter of Veronica Makihio Shenkunde Luttrell[3] of the Washambala tribe of the Usambara Mountains, and Dr.

    William Leon Luttrell[3] from Bossier City, Louisiana. She is one of four daughters.[3] Her family emigrated to Canada when she was five years old,[2] and she was raised in Toronto.
